The Eternal Current - Aaron Niequist book review

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
-Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

In The Eternal Current, pastor and worship leader Aaron Niequist shares the story of how he nearly lost the shallow faith of his youth and in the process found something deeper. During his crisis of faith Niequist discovered the truth about the Kingdom of God: it’s not just a future destination but an ever-present reality. This revelation caused him to search for ways to stay rooted in this reality. That’s when he discovered what he calls “practiced based faith”.

Niequist’s practice based faith is exactly what it sounds like: faith based around spiritual practices. He explains how spiritual practices like contemplative prayer, the Examen, etc. keep us focused on the Kingdom of God. Even though practice based faith is the focus of this book, Niequist is quick to point out that these practices aren’t an end but the means to an end. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
