Possessing The Gates Of The Enemy - Cindy Jacobs book review

Image
First published in 1991, Possessing The Gates Of The Enemy has come to be known by some as a classic. The new 4th edition has been revised and contains a study guide. This edition also has new forewords by Lou Engle and the late C. Peter Wagner.  In Possessing The Gates Of The Enemy Cindy Jacobs, a prophet and intercessor, chronicles her journey as an intercessor. She also explains what intercession is, how to intercede, and how NOT to intercede. Jacobs also writes specifically to pastors, prayer leaders and other ministry leaders in certain sections of the book. This book is written for anyone, whether someone with an interest in intercession or an experienced intercessory prayer group leader looking for ways to improve their group. I highly recommend this book.  I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.   Cindy Jacobs  and her husband, Mike, are the founders of Generals International, a worldwide ministr...

The Complete Jewish Study Bible review

Image
The Complete Jewish Study Bible by Hendrickson Publishers attempts to show the reader the Jewishness of the whole Bible. The Complete Jewish Bible(CJB) translation is paired with study notes, theme articles, topical articles, and book introductions written by both Christians and Messianic Jews(Jewish believers in the Messiah).  The Translation  The Complete Jewish Bible translation, translated by Messianic Jew David H. Stern, is more of a dynamic equivalent(thought for thought) translation than a formal equivalent(word for word) translation, although it is not quite a paraphrase like The Message. It is just slightly more “dynamic” than the NIV. The biggest difference between the CJB and other translations is the frequent use of Hebrew words. All books of the Bible and most names, place names, and Jewish concepts are in Hebrew. Some examples are Mattityahu(Matthew), Yeshua(Jesus), talmidim(disciples), and Yerushalayim(Jerusalem). Another major difference is that the T...

The Spiritual Gifts Handbook - Randy Clark and Mary Healy book review

Image
In The Spiritual Gifts Handbook Randy Clark(a charismatic healing minister) and Mary Healy(a Catholic Bible scholar) discuss the controversial issue of spiritual gifts. Many argue over whether the gifts are still around today and if so, which ones. Clark and Healy would both agree that all the gifts are still active and available to all believers.  The authors attempt to show the reader the biblical and historical evidence for the gifts and get rid of any confusion many have regarding the gifts. They also define and explain the function of a wide variety of the gifts. The book shows both the Protestant and Catholic view of the gifts. I highly recommend this book.  I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  Randy Clark , with a D.Min. from United Theological Seminary and a M.Div. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is the founder of Global Awakening (www.globalawakening.com), a teaching, healing, and impartation minist...

Adamant - Lisa Bevere book review

Image
The word “adamant” was first used by ancient Greek philosophers to describe a nonexistent stone or metal that is indestructible. Mankind searched for this stone for many years and thought they had found it with the discovery of the diamond. The words diamond and adamant were even used interchangeably until it was discovered that diamonds can melt when exposed to enough heat. Since then the word adamant has been used metaphorically to mean unshakable, immovable, or uncompromising. Lisa Bevere claims to have found this Adamant: Jesus the Cornerstone.  In Adamant, New York Times Bestselling Author Lisa Bevere builds upon this concept of Adamant in eleven chapters describing characteristics God has and characteristics we need to have like. The Adamant, Adamantly Intimate, Adamantly Constant, Adamant in Love, and Adamant in Word are just a few of them. I highly recommend this book.  I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  Lisa Beve...

How To Be A Perfect Christian - The Babylon Bee book review

Image
WARNING: IN THE TRADITION OF THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS BY C. S. LEWIS, THIS STINGING SATIRE TAKES A HEALTHY STAB AT CULTURAL CHRISTIANITY . READ IT, LAUGH ABOUT IT... AND THEN LET IT LEAD YOU TO THE SWEET TASTE OF TRUE GRACE.                                   - The back cover I have been a huge fan and regular reader of the Babylon Bee for close to a year. When I found out they were releasing a book, I got a copy as soon as possible. In How To Be a Perfect Christian, The Bee offers terrible advice on how to reach spiritual perfection. Step number one being leave your church. Through ten chapters, the Bee humorously explains how to find the right church, worship like a pro, do life together, serve without lifting a finger, look really spiritual online, conform to mainstream Christian beliefs, crusade against the heathens and more.  Before reading this book, I strongly recommend visit...

Do Greater Things - Robby Dawkins book review

Image
I first came across Robby Dawkins while watching the tv series Adventures With God by filmmaker Darren Wilson. He also appears in four of Wilson’s documentaries: Furious Love, Father of Lights, Holy Ghost: Reborn, and Finger of God 2. Do Greater Things is the first book I have read by the author.  In Do Greater Things, Dawkins encourages the reader to seek out the greater things Jesus describes  in John 14:12 -  Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in  me will do the works I have been doing,  and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. Robby explains how this is available to every believer and should be the standard Christian experience. Throughout the book are testimonies of people who have been impacted by Dawkin’s ministry and teachings of his previous books. I highly recommend this book and the documentaries listed above.  I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ...

Discipleship - A. W. Tozer book review

Image
A. W. Tozer (1897-1963) was a pastor and author of many books including the well known classics, The Pursuit Of God and The Knowledge of the Holy. Many books have been published posthumously from his sermons and other writings. Discipleship is one of these.  In Discipleship, Tozer examines like  “What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ?” and “Is discipleship necessary?” He does this in chapters like Marks of Discipleship, True and False Disciples, “Accepting” Christ, Obedience is Not an Option, and You Cannot Face Two Directions. I highly recommend this book and any other book by Tozer.  I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  A.W. TOZER  began his lifelong pursuit of God at the age of seventeen after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio. A self-taught theologian, Tozer was a pastor, writer and editor whose powerful use of words continues to grip the intellect and stir the soul of today's reader....
