Jesus Revolution - Greg Laurie and Ellen Vaughn review

Image
Jesus Revolution by Greg Laurie and Ellen Vaughn tells the story of the Jesus Movement, a major revival that broke out in the ‘60s and ‘70s and strongly impacted the West Coast, especially the hippie culture of the time. The book is written mostly as a biography of Laurie and his firsthand experience with the revival, Calvary Chapel, and people like Lonnie Frisbee and Chuck Smith. It also gives an overview of the ‘60s and ‘70s culture and how it is really similar to today’s culture. I highly recommend this book.  I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  Greg Laurie  is senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, with campuses in California and Hawaii. He began his pastoral ministry at the age of 19, leading a Bible study of 30 people. Today, Harvest is one of the largest churches in America. More than 5.6 million people have attended Laurie's Harvest Crusades since 1990, and more than 500,000 people have registered profess...

The Eternal Current - Aaron Niequist book review

Image
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” -Matthew 11:28-30 MSG In The Eternal Current, pastor and worship leader Aaron Niequist shares the story of how he nearly lost the shallow faith of his youth and in the process found something deeper. During his crisis of faith Niequist discovered the truth about the Kingdom of God: it’s not just a future destination but an ever-present reality. This revelation caused him to search for ways to stay rooted in this reality. That’s when he discovered what he calls “practiced based faith”. Niequist’s practice based faith is exactly what it sounds like: faith based around spiritual practices. He explains how spiritual practices like...

Quit Church - Chris Sonksen book review

Image
In Quit Church, pastor and author Chris Sonksen encourages the reader to do exactly that:quit church.   His definition of “quitting church” is probably different from most people’s. Sonksen is trying to convince the reader to quit their casual, halfhearted,“business as usual” church. Sonksen focuses on six key areas in which believers need to “quit”. These chapter titles are just as provocative as the book title: Quit Expecting To Wake Up In Heaven, Quit Giving Your Money Away, Quit Helping Out, Quit Hoping People Will Come, Quit Stopping By, and Quit Your Church Friends. Overall, I liked the book and would recommend reading it. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Chris Sonksen  understands church growth and how to help pastors who may feel stuck because their church isn't growing. His personal experience comes from his own success in pioneering South Hills Church, a multi-campus church that has been widely recognized for its unprec...

The Complete Guide To Dream Interpretation - Marsha Trimble Dunstan book review

Image
I had never heard of the author before this book, but seeing that the foreword was written by Mike Bickle, I thought it was worth a try. In The Complete Guide To Dream Interpretation, Marsha Trimble Dunstan introduces the reader to a method of dream interpretation that looks at symbols in dreams and tries to interpret these symbols using biblical metaphors. For example, a sword could represent the Word of God and wind could represent the Holy Spirit. In addition to providing this method of biblical dream interpretation, Dunstan also attempts to give a biblical basis for prophetic dreams, answer common questions about dreams, and clear up any misconceptions people might have concerning dreams. She also shares her personal journey with dream interpretation and gives many examples of dreams and their interpretations. One of the most interesting things about this book is the dream symbol dictionary at the end. It contains over 3,800 entries and almost all of them have biblical refere...

Possessing The Gates Of The Enemy - Cindy Jacobs book review

Image
First published in 1991, Possessing The Gates Of The Enemy has come to be known by some as a classic. The new 4th edition has been revised and contains a study guide. This edition also has new forewords by Lou Engle and the late C. Peter Wagner.  In Possessing The Gates Of The Enemy Cindy Jacobs, a prophet and intercessor, chronicles her journey as an intercessor. She also explains what intercession is, how to intercede, and how NOT to intercede. Jacobs also writes specifically to pastors, prayer leaders and other ministry leaders in certain sections of the book. This book is written for anyone, whether someone with an interest in intercession or an experienced intercessory prayer group leader looking for ways to improve their group. I highly recommend this book.  I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.   Cindy Jacobs  and her husband, Mike, are the founders of Generals International, a worldwide ministr...

The Complete Jewish Study Bible review

Image
The Complete Jewish Study Bible by Hendrickson Publishers attempts to show the reader the Jewishness of the whole Bible. The Complete Jewish Bible(CJB) translation is paired with study notes, theme articles, topical articles, and book introductions written by both Christians and Messianic Jews(Jewish believers in the Messiah).  The Translation  The Complete Jewish Bible translation, translated by Messianic Jew David H. Stern, is more of a dynamic equivalent(thought for thought) translation than a formal equivalent(word for word) translation, although it is not quite a paraphrase like The Message. It is just slightly more “dynamic” than the NIV. The biggest difference between the CJB and other translations is the frequent use of Hebrew words. All books of the Bible and most names, place names, and Jewish concepts are in Hebrew. Some examples are Mattityahu(Matthew), Yeshua(Jesus), talmidim(disciples), and Yerushalayim(Jerusalem). Another major difference is that the T...
